Stone Gables Estate Trail Rides (Ironstone Ranch)
Operator: Stone Gables Estate / Ironstone Ranch | 1 Hollinger Lane, Star Barn Way, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 | (717) 413-2660
Best for: Families and individuals who want to actually get in the saddle, experience the Lancaster countryside on horseback rather than from a buggy, and ride through a property with genuine historical and architectural significance.
Stone Gables Estate is a working horse ranch and historic property in Elizabethtown, 15 minutes from Lancaster City and Hershey. The Ironstone Ranch operation offers guided 1-hour trail rides through 280-plus acres of private woodlands, fields, and orchards, on gentle, well-mannered horses paired with experienced equestrian guides. No prior riding experience is required, and the trails move at a relaxed walking pace throughout, giving the guide room to share the history of the estate and the surrounding landscape as you ride.
The trail context at Stone Gables is what sets it apart from a standard Pennsylvania countryside ride. Sections of the trail follow the old railroad route along which Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train and the Liberty Bell once traveled. The fully restored Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge, one of the most photographed historic structures in Lancaster County, sits along the route. And the Star Barn Village — a collection of eight Gothic Revival-style barns dating to the 1800s — is visible from sections of the trail. The estate’s resident wildlife adds another layer: deer, wild turkeys, and foxes are regular sightings as the horses move through the wooded sections.
Stone Gables Estate is also a mission-driven organization. The Abel family states that 100% of the estate’s net proceeds are donated to Brittany’s Hope, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to reducing the financial barriers of international adoption for abandoned children. This is not a marketing angle — it’s the stated operating purpose of the estate. For visitors who care about where their spending goes, this is worth knowing.
Trail rides are available Tuesday through Saturday only; the estate is closed Sundays. Departure times are 10am, 11:30am, 2pm, and 3:30pm. Pricing is $89.90 per person Monday through Thursday and $99.90 per person Friday and Saturday. The weight limit is 225 pounds. Arrive 15 minutes early for your scheduled ride. Aaron & Jessica’s Buggy Rides
Operator: Aaron & Jessica’s Buggy Rides | 3121 Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks, PA 17572 (at Plain & Fancy Farm) | (717) 768-8828
Best for: Families of all ages, visitors to Lancaster who want the authentic Amish cultural experience, and groups who want multiple route options and the flexibility to walk in without a reservation.
Aaron & Jessica’s Buggy Rides has been operating in Lancaster County for over 30 years and was rated the number one thing to do around Lancaster by Forbes. The drivers are Amish and Mennonite community members — not actors or guides who have studied the culture, but people who actually live it. When your driver explains what it means to farm without electricity, why Amish families shun certain technologies, or what life looks like without a car, they’re speaking from personal experience. That specific quality of local knowledge is the thing that separates this operation from a lot of horse-drawn carriage tours.
The operation offers 7 routes and more than 20 options, which is an unusually wide selection for a Lancaster buggy ride company. The standard 30-35 minute tour ($18 for adults, $12 for children ages 3-12, free for 2 and under) takes you through a cluster of Amish homes and businesses on all-Amish backroads, with a stop at an Amish farm where cookies, snacks, and drinks are brought out to the carriage. The 50-60 minute ride ($20 for adults) extends the route to include a visit to a real working Amish farm, where the driver helps you off the buggy to tour the barn, see the farm equipment, and meet the cows, chickens, goats, and horses up close.
Private buggy rides are available for groups or anyone who wants the route customized to their interests. The staff can accommodate birthday celebrations, engagements, anniversary packages, and even specialized tours focusing on Amish healthcare practices led by Jessica herself, who is now part of the local healthcare community. Pets are welcome. The operation is handicapped accessible. Children under 3 ride free.
Walk-ins are generally accommodated, which makes Aaron & Jessica’s one of the more flexible options for visitors who haven’t planned ahead. Located at Plain & Fancy Farm on Route 340 between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse, the site also includes a restaurant, inn, and additional Amish country activities. Open 7 days a week during the season.

Amish Buggy Tour
Working Dairy Farm Visit
Covered Bridge Route
Intercourse, PA
AAA Buggy Rides
Operator: AAA (Amish All Around) Buggy Rides | 3461 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, PA 17534
Best for: Couples, visitors who want to get off the buggy and walk a working Amish dairy farm, and anyone who wants a covered bridge route through the Lancaster countryside.
AAA Buggy Rides operates in the village of Intercourse, one of the most distinctively named and most authentically Amish communities in Lancaster County. The Old Philadelphia Pike running through Intercourse has been a working Amish corridor since the earliest settlement of this county, and some of the farms you pass on the AAA route were first established as early as 1737. That sense of unbroken agricultural history is present in the landscape in a way that’s genuinely tangible from a buggy seat at horse’s pace.
The feature that distinguishes AAA from other Lancaster buggy operations is the working dairy farm stop included in their farm visit route. This is not a staged farm for tourists. The guides take you to an active Amish dairy operation, help you off the buggy, and walk you through the barn to see the cows, goats, chickens, and horses at close range while explaining the farm equipment and daily practices. In my experience, the moment of actually standing in an Amish dairy barn surrounded by working animals is a different kind of encounter than viewing the farm from the road, and the guides here are practiced at making that stop substantive rather than brief.
The covered bridge route is the other standout option. Lancaster County has the highest concentration of covered bridges in Pennsylvania, and riding through one in a horse-drawn buggy at the pace horses actually travel is a specific experience that photos can’t replicate. The sound of the hooves echoing through the covered bridge, the change in light and temperature inside the structure, and the visual of the wooden timbers framing the farmland on the other side: this is a small thing that reviewers consistently mention as a highlight.
AAA is open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and is closed Sundays. Walk-ins are welcome and a $2-off-adult coupon is available on their website. Group rates are available for school trips, motorcoach tours, and reunions.
